Valentine’s Day Group Weddings

The only Valentine’s Day wedding I’ll be attending this year is on TV. While I cheer with the rest of the Glee cast as we watch Will and Emma waltz down the aisle, an estimated 2.6 million newlywed couples in the U.S. will be dancing the night away after exchanging their vows today.

Three lucky couples received the wedding of their dreams this morning during the 19th annual Love is in the Air group wedding at the Empire State Building, a building that holds the distinct honor of the world’s most romantic building. From An Affair to Remember to Sleepless in Seattle, every woman has, at some point, fantasized about kissing their lover at midnight atop the spire-tipped skyscraper. Today, the dreams of Laurie Ann Phillips, Danielle Brabham and Kari Morey came true.

Treated to a celebrity-designed wedding by Preston Bailey, each couple received an all-expenses paid ceremony and reception at the iconic landmark, which were inspired by the changing seasons. The three lucky couples were chosen based on the love stories they submitted to the Empire State Building Contest Facebook page. Philips and her husband Daniel Rosenthal, of Washington, D.C., opted to purchase a house for their four combined children instead of splurging on a ring. Brabhman’s husband Michael Lynch, of Miami Shore, Florida, proposed during the hectic storms of Hurricane Issac last August while Morey and her Army husband, John Kelly, look forward to  beginning their lives together before John deploys again this August.

Before the morning festivities began, Bailey, who specializes in creating opulent, theatrical weddings, tied the knot with his long-time partner Theo Bleckmann, a Grammy-nominated singer, at the stroke of midnight. “Theo and I are thrilled to be celebrating our special night with our closest family and friends at the iconic Empire State Building,” Bailey says in a recent press statement. “Then, to wake up and give the three couples the wedding of their dreams as they celebrate their own respective unions; love really is in the air!”

If you are staying in tonight with your honey — and you just can’t get him to agree to let you watch the wedding on Glee — check out these ideas for An Affordable Valentine’s Day for Newlyweds by Nina Calloway, About.com’s Wedding Guide.
